DENNIS FERRER: WHAT YOU WEARING

DJ Mag talks fashion with Dennis Ferrer

What are you wearing right now?
“Right now I'm wearing a casual Scotch & Soda loose fitting t-shirt in off-pink that I bought at their store in London. The best part of traveling is never knowing when you're gonna come across clothing that speaks to you (laughs).

For lower wear I've got on a pair of Absolut Joy — Einstein light denim jean shorts, with a bit of a 'harem crotch', bought at a very cool shop called EGB when I was hanging about downtown Ibiza participating in retail therapy. On my feet are a pair of Satorisan Heisei tie-dye Saxony blue sneakers that I absolutely love! These were bought at a shop in Ibiza called Panorama. The denim-dyed look of them is amazing. I was casually strolling by and it was like 'wtf are those?!'.”

How would you describe your style?
“I suppose I'm a bit on the casual side, with a flair of sporty/edgy current couture. For example, I like unique shirts that are current and fashionable, such as Xagon Man, Bassike, Thom Krom, but I'll wear them with a pair of Made & Crafted jeans or some denim shorts, and then it's all about the sneakers.

Now since I'm a sneaker guy, coming from hip-hop as a kid in the Bronx, my tastes continuously are changing, but I'm really into limited-edition stuff made by guest designers, such as John Varvatos' Converse, and of course standard classics such as Dunks, classic Jordans, Cortez's etc.”

Describe an outfit you remember from as far back into your childhood as possible...
“Oh wow (laughs). hmmm I think the standard NYC inner city kid uniform of blue and grey suede Pumas with dark grey Lee jeans, that we would take to the tailor to have them put in a permanent crease — say what?

Look it up, b-boy style! And a navy blue LeTigre short-sleeved shirt buttoned all the way up. A Kangol hat was an optional accessory, but one that could possibly shore up your social ranking. This was the b-boy's soldier uniform.”

Who is your favourite designer?
“I've been partial for some time now to Thom Krom for my gig shirts. Their cuts are amazing, edgy, very modern and perfect for how I feel clothing should be for me at this time. It's dark and whispers futuristic to me.”

What is your favourite boutique?
“2PR in Amsterdam always has very edgy current wear. EGB in Ibiza just before the start of the season is amazing. All Saints for generic every day stuff, for me it's my safety net.”

What is your most treasured item of clothing or jewellery?
“My still brand-new pair of unworn Shell Toe White Adidas I've had for six years now, because they're a reminder of where I come from and how much I've evolved.”

What are you currently working on?
“I just finished up my first Ibiza season as a resident of Pacha's Insane party. I'm taking a few weeks off coming up to complete the work on my new album for Defected, that's due at the end of the year.

I'm very impressed with the direction that Simon and the crew there took the label in this year and I'm honoured to be working with long-time friends. There's the London Grammar remix of 'Sights' that should be out soon, and a couple of other remixes are in the making as well. I will also be doing a new Son of Raw single. Like I've said before, sometimes you have to go back to go forwards.”
