S'EXPRESS TEASE OUT REMIX ALBUM

S'Express, the project fronted by DJ Mark Moore in the late '80s and early '90s, have a remix album dropping on Needle Boss Records soon.

It's preceded by a remix EP, the 'S'Express Excursions EP', with four reworkings of S'Express classics. Punks Jump Up turn 'Hey Music Lover' into a big room house beast; I-Robots make 'Funky Killer' into a pounding electroid cut; and Vanilla Ace and the Supermen Lovers turn 'Theme From S'Express' into a shuffly disco-funker and a quirky electro floor-filler respectively.

DJ Mag had an exclusive listen to the remix album while doing a Game Changer interview with Mark recently for the July issue of the magazine. It also features rejigs by Chris & Cosey from Throbbing Gristle, Tom Furse from The Horrors, Horsemeat Disco, Monarchy, Jagz Kooner, Reuben Wu from Ladytron, Kent Odessa, I Am A Camera and more.

Mark himself has also done a remix, and a very well known band have also covered 'Mantra For A State Of Mind', featuring somebody else from another famous band on guitar! That one is being kept under wraps for the time being...

“I wanted to curate the remix album as if it was a movie soundtrack,” Mark said. “I've got three versions of 'Nothing To Lose', but they're all completely different — a bit like if John Barry was doing a James Bond film, and you'd have the main theme of 'You Only Live Twice' or 'Diamonds Are Forever' or whatever, and you'd have different versions in different styles. It works, it sounds like a coherent album from beginning to end, rather than a generic remix album.”

S'Express was the name Mark adopted in the late '80s for his disco house project. 'Theme', the first single, shot to No.1 in the charts and Mark inadvertently became a pop star — having made his name as a pioneering house DJ in London from the mid-'80s onwards. S'Express had some more hits, made a couple of albums, did hundreds of interviews and toured the world before Mark got sick of “the circus” and went back to being a DJ — which he continues to be today.

Asked if it was weird going into the S'Express mindset, Mark responded in the affirmative. “Yeah, I've done a remix for the album, and I've been doing some new stuff too,” he revealed.

The 'S'Express Excursions EP' is out in September.
