SKREAM CALLS TIME ON DUBSTEP
Magnetic Man man says “it's over”
An interview with an unlikely source of dance music wisdom has signalled Skream's recent DJ set for RBMA alongside Plastician and Mala was his last wearing dubstep colours.
He's quoted by the Daily Star: “It’s the last dubstep show I’ll play until further notice. Dubstep is just a name now. It doesn’t have a meaning any more and the movement is over. It’s like the end of a relationship but it’s ended on a high.”
“I’ve done dubstep since I was 14 but there’s no way I’m going to be dictated to. I stopped because I’m not inspired by it any more.”
While the Croydon-born pioneer pledges to continue DJing, and a Magnetic Man album is on the way, his focus will remain on disco as it has in recent sets, he apparently told the tabloid, with further interest in the glitter ball within his own production thanks in part to the new Daft Punk album (Is it any good? We reviewed it HERE).
Following the interview, Skream rejected the comments about dubstep's demise. He later Tweeted:
'Just to clarify, I never said Dubstep is dead... Pretty pissed off that I've been quoted saying that.'
Regardless of his views about the future of the syncopated wobbles he helped create, we can be safe in the assumption he's swapped the sick drops for steady 4/4s for the time being, leaving dubstep in the trusty hands of purists in the UK and EDM brosefs Stateside.
