Floating Points has shared his first new single of the year – listen to ‘Birth4000’ below.

Sam Shepherd’s latest release, which is out now on Ninja Tune, marks a sonic shift from previous 2022 single ‘Someone Close’ with oscillating Giorgio Moroder-nodding synths and beats.

The track has been played by other dancefloor stars this summer including Four Tet, Peggy Gou, Ben UFO, and by Shepherd himself during his b2b with Daphni at Glastonbury Festival 2023.

It follows Shepherd performing his 2021 Mercury Prize-nominated collaborative album with the late jazz legend Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, ‘Promises’, at the Hollywood Bowl last month. Shabaka Hutchings, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), Dan Snaith (Caribou), Kara Lis Coverdale and Hinako Omori joined him onstage, with Miguel Atwood Ferguson conducting.

Elsewhere, Shepherd has spent much of 2023 composing his first ballet for symphony orchestra and electronics, Mere Mortals, which will be performed by the San Francisco Ballet and opens in January 2024.
