French nightclubs officially recognised as cultural actors under new legislation

Minister of Culture Rachida Dati said this legislation will improve the operating conditions of such venues

French nightclubs officially recognised as cultural actors under new legislation

Nightclubs in France are to be recognised as "cultural actors" under new legislation announced by the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati.

Sharing news of the development via social media, Dati said that such legislation would improve the operating conditions of nightclubs in the country. "It's important to recognise clubs and discotheques as popular cultural actors," she added.

The legislation follows years of lobbying by French pressure groups such as Culture Nuit, which is a union of nightlife venues that includes key French clubs like Rex Club and Le Badaboum among its members. Members of the union met with Dati last month ahead of the announcement of this new legislation.

Welcoming the development, Culture Nuit said: "We thank the minister for her commitment and joint actions to come."

In 2021, another union of nightlife venues, called Club-Culture, launched with the purpose of securing special cultural status for their businesses

The move by the French Government follows similar steps taken by local government in Berlin to recognise nightclubs as cultural institutions.
