Spotify is working on a “remix” feature that will allow users to speed up, slow down and mash up songs.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, the streaming giant hopes to “appeal to young users, while generating new revenue for artists” with the new tools, which will be available to Premium subscribers. The modified versions of the tracks will be added to “virtual collections” on Spotify but not be made available on other platforms.

The report suggests that Spotify is seeking to compete with TikTok where the trend for sped-up songs has grown in recent years: 38% of songs on TikTok had their speeds or pitches modified in 2023.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Spotify is developing a "supremium" plan, which is expected to offer high-fidelity audio and other premium features at a higher price point.

Spotify also recently announced its move to demonetise tracks with under 1,000 streams and is due to raise its premium prices at the end of this month. In the UK, this will result in the cost going up by 9% per month, from £10.99 to £11.99.

In March, Spotify announced its decision to add video learning content to its streaming platform, including music instrument learning courses, music performance lessons, and music production tutorials.
