Uber is launching in Ibiza

Taxi service Uber is launching in Ibiza.

Diario de Ibiza reports that, after months of teasing the arrival of the ride-hailing company on the White Isle, it's now been confirmed that the launch will be on Wednesday, 29th November. Just 14 cars will initially be available for use on the island, but this number is expected to progressively rise over the coming months as more drivers take up the technology and are granted the required VTC licenses from local authorities.

Uber's director general in Spain and Portugal, Fernández Aramburu, said: "As we do in other cities in the rest of Spain, we open the availability of our service to the taxi sector, to any other fleet of a company with VTC [licenses] or to self-employed people who have a [VTC] license." As with its service elsewhere, Uber will not hire any specific drivers, but will instead allows its technology to be used on a freelance basis by drivers with the necessary paperwork.

Initially, Uber will offer two types of service in Ibiza: Uber Comfort and Uber Van, with capacity for four and six passengers, respectively. Drivers with a license will be required to charge the same price for a trip that is already stipulated in their tariff regime, though Uber will take a 12% commission fee for the use of its technology.

Drivers who use the platform are offered an incentive of €150 for their first 25 trips, while a driver who recruits another colleague to register with Uber can be rewarded with another bonus of €300 euros for doing so.

The arrival of Uber in Ibiza follows on from the platform also launching in Mallorca in June of this year. The island initially carried a fleet of 50 cars, which has steadily risen since.

Earlier this year, Hï Ibiza was voted the world's best club in DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs poll for 2023.
