Jacob Van Hage knows his beats. A percussive connoisseur, he's an inventor of unheard of drum patterns and as a DJ his selection is up there with the finest. Adding to that, he's steadily becoming a bona fide world-beater too. Having played Poland, Russia and Venezuela already this year, he's ready to make his London debut this month, on Wednesday 12th September at Jalouse near Oxford Circus.
With tracks on Doorn Records and Dim Mak, plus remixes of Dada Life, Ferry Corsten and Marcel Woods under his belt, he's clearly a melodic dance force to be reckoned with, so we stopped him for a chat...
how's it going, Jacob?
“I'm doing pretty good thank you! Working hard, playing loud!”
Are you looking forward to your London debut?
“Yes I am. It's my second time in the UK and this time London feels very special. A couple of months ago I was in London and went too a club show with Calvin Harris. The vibe was so cool and the crowd really knows how to party so I can't wait!”
Where else have you played so far in 2012?
“I've played multiple times in Russia and did cool shows in Poland, Scotland and one of the best shows was in Venezuela. In Caracas, I headlined a big indoor festival and we blew the roof off. Getting tweets about that gig every week. And my second time, Tomorrowland was legendary on the V-Sessions stage was good friend Yves V.
What DJ gig are you most proud off?
“I have to say the show in Caracas Venezuela. The Illusion Music Fest was well organized, the crowd was insane and the whole show was off the hook. Can't wait to go back.”
Describe your music for DJ Mag readers who may not be aware of you?
“My music is a blend of different styles. And every time we release a track it's funny when Beatport and the label cannot decide if the track is trance, progressive or ouse etc. I like to use cool beats, crazy drums, trancy leads, housy grooves, techy parts all mixed together. Listen to my tracks 'Synthomanic' and 'Spotfire' and you will hear what I mean.”
What can we expect from your DJ set at Jalouse?
“At Jalouse, I'm going to create a mix between my recent releases, upcoming releases (exclusives), some big club hits, some personal favourites and my famous mashups. So catch me jumpin' and screamin' all night, I guess!”
What tracks have you released so far this year?
“I've released two tracks this year so far and three more are coming up. The first release I did was EMP with Dyro and the second one was Voodoo with Saint Liz. These babies did some serious dancefloor damage and got a lot of cool support by names like Tiesto, David Guetta, Ferry Corsten, Sebastian Ingrosso and more big names. Both artists I did these collabs with are really talented guys who will bring the scene more crazy stuff this year solo!”
Which labels and artists have you worked with?
“Two of my biggest release were 'Spotfire' and 'Convoi' both on Sander van Doorn's Doorn Records. Another cool track was released on Steve Aoki's Dim Mak called 'Eponym' together with D-wayne. Next to these originals I did remixes for Dada Life, Ferry Corsten, Peter Luts and Marcel Woods.”
What's next in your busy schedule?
“I just signed at Cue Music in the US for the bookings in North America so that's a good thing. We are currently changing the total artwork, JVH logo and photos so this will take some hard work and time to finish. Finally more gigs, more collabs and I can't wait for Miami '13! I really miss it!”
