If ever there was proof that good things come in small packages then Plastic People, in the Shoreditch area of London, is surely it. Whilst the area is still awash with naff fashion and American Apparel uniforms, the no-frills basement of Plastic People remains the most honest and intensely intimate clubbing experience in the capital.

As seeing further than five feet in front of you is impossible on Plastic's tiny doom-dark dancefloor, the only instinctive response is to totally surrender to the womb-like sound chasm of its booming bass-heavy system.

Sunday night's cult FWD remains the central clubbing nucleus of the dubstep/funky/wonky scenes, whilst DJs like Dixon, Âme and Andrew Weatherall have all spun at other nights recently. But whatever the genre, priority is always given to experimental sounds at the underground retreat.

"Plastic People is so intimate that it's almost scary," says 3024's Martyn. "The crowd are so close that they are literally staring you in the face, but it's great to get such immediate interaction. It feels like the ultimate house party."
