6. Matter

Just over a year old, and Fabric's latest venture matter has already indelibly imprinted itself on London's clubbing landscape. Small wonder. A combination of precision-tooled space-age sonics - with a year 3000, "Body-sonic" dancefloor - austere, industrial décor, and a broad umbrella of diverse promotions has quickly rocketed matter to the upper echelons of the club hierarchy, and into our affections.

Perched precariously on the tip of the Greenwich peninsula, carved into the side of the Millennium Dome, matter's South London stronghold has seen it become a d&b fan's paradise, with Ram and Hospital Records both hosting regular sold-out events there. In fact, there's something to cater for all tastes across the dance divides. Whether it's John Digweed's Bedrock, Sven Väth's Cocoon, dubstep savants FWD, or live shows from the likes of Wu Tang head-case Method Man, Matter's got it covered.

Undisputed drum & bass king Andy C is a man who's put matter's superior soundsystem through its paces more than most, and for him, it doesn't get much better than blasting out beats to an appreciative crowd there.

"It feels like a club from the future," says Andy. "The sound is amazing everywhere in the club, and the view down to the dancefloor from the second balcony or the bridge is jaw-dropping. Sometimes at the Ram nights I find a nice spot up high, and just watch the night going on for a while. They make for incredible memories."
