Timmy Trumpet is a tour de force. The Australian Conservatorium of Music graduate and accomplished jazz musician turned dance star has an infectious sense of energy in person, and is even more buoyant when up on stage blasting out big hooks from his iconic trumpet. This year he did that more times than ever before, playing up to five gigs a week — chiefly in a new country each time.
Because of his tireless work ethic, Timmy has now fully crossed over into the main stage arena in America and played what he says was a long-time "bucket list" gig at Lollapalooza in Chicago. “I’m incredibly honoured and grateful that fans turn up year in, year out, and go out of their way to vote for me,” says the man who married the love of his life last summer and spent this summer playing his first Ibiza residency at Amnesia. “The Island is truly magical, and this year was extra special,” he adds, referring to the army of guests he had up on stage with him, often at the last minute and with no pre-planning.
“I love sharing the stage with other artists. The energy always goes to a whole new level. And to share it with people I’ve always wanted to work with after we’ve made a record together makes it so much more special because not everything goes to plan and, more often than not, that’s where the magic happens if you’re ready to roll with it.”
Because of the intensity with which Timmy plays up on stage, he can't play for much longer than 90 minutes. “I probably burn 1000-plus calories up there and at every show I give them everything I’ve got, so respect to the ones that can do it for hours,” he laughs. Musically, he has enjoyed the resurgence of certain genres and hearing them in a new light. “All music, like fashion, floats in and out of our existence. Working with artists that are influential in reinvigorating sounds and emotions from the past, and seeing how they shape the elements for brand new audiences is incredible."
To that end he has been doing his own forward-thinking experiments, mixing the classical compositions of his background with the electronic sounds of now and elements from his early days as a bona-fide jazz musician. It has given rise to his classical EP, ‘Timmy Trumpet’s SINPHONY No. 1’, and he promises other works are in the making.
Before heading off to yet anther show, Timmy shares one of his goals for the future. “The introduction of more live instrumentation and accompaniment for big shows has always been on the cards. Hopefully sooner than later!”
