Top 100 DJs / 53. Erick Morillo

53. Erick Morillo
Best known for: His label Subliminal
Gig of 2009: State, Buenos Aires
Tune of 2009: Axwell, Ingrosso, Angello, Laidback Luke feat Deborah Cox 'Leave The World Behind' (Axtone)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Mendo or Luciano
The track that changed your life: Jungle Brothers 'I'll House You'
Most underrated DJ: Scumfrog
Biggest challenge this year: For me, this year has been about 'Where am I going?' and 'What am I doing?'
Top tech toy: I had a demo of the new CDJ-2000. That could change things. It's only a matter of time now for CDs.
"I don't normally stage dive," says Erick Morillo. "That night I stage dived three times. That should tell you how good it was."
He's talking about his gig of 2009, at State, in Buenos Aires. Checking out the clips on YouTube, we don't blame him for getting a little exuberant.
"The gigs this year have been phenomenal," he adds. "I promised myself last year that I wouldn't work as hard this year. That was what was burning me out. This year, I feel like I'm back again, in a lot of ways."
One thing that he promises is back is Subliminal, his label which, over the past couple of years, has been far less prolific than during its heyday in the mid-2000s. Morillo has formed a partnership with the UK's Defected (now also custodians of Strictly Rhythm) to reinvigorate the label once more, with nine releases already on the slate.
"For a while there we slowed things down to a snail's pace, and now we're back firing on all cylinders."
Morillo is planning a new artist album too, which he plans to lay down in the studio this autumn and release some time next summer.
"For a long time I didn't want to do another album, but now I'm hungry again," he says.
