Top 100 DJs / 78. Sébastien Léger

78. Sébastien Léger
Best known for: Being a prolific producer and DJ.
Gig of 2009: Loveland Festival, here in Amsterdam in August. It was really good in every way - the crowd, the soundsystem, the stage, the line-up, the weather.
Tune of 2009: Siwell 'Kenya' (Sphera)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Marco Carola. I've been taken by how he's slowed everything down and got much groovier.
The track that changed your life: Lil' Louis's 'French Kiss'. I was 10-years-old when it came out. It was so unique, I can just remember thinking, 'Wow!'
Most underrated DJ: Broombeck's live shows are incredible. Proper techno.
Biggest challenge this year: To stop playing all the hits in my set.
Top tech toy: Ableton Live. If I didn't have that I'd be bored, doing nothing!
Sébastien Léger has been at the top of his game for a decade now - respected by his contemporaries and idolised by those who worship at the altar of pleasure-seeking dance music. However, that doesn't mean the Amsterdam-dwelling French DJ/producer isn't still in thrall to his own heroes, as his highlight of 2009 attests.
"Opening for Dubfire and Richie Hawtin at this year's Global Gathering in Ukraine was an absolute privilege," he outlines. "I love their music. I actually opened for Richie 10 years ago, so to do it again was so good!"
For Léger, that experience rounded off what has been an incredible 2009. Granted, the year was tough, what with the economic downturn, but like many others, Léger just thinks this made people party in a more overt manner.
"There was definitely a difference this year," he reflects. "We had to work harder to please the crowd, but that can only be a good thing."
At present he's planning a live show to showcase his music - "It's just at the ideas stage at the moment,"- and he's preparing a compilation album of his music for a rather renowned label, too. Looks like 2010 will be another corker.
