Top 100 DJs / 97. Nic Fanciulli

97. Nic Fanciulli
Best known for: My One+One alliance with James Zabiela.
Gig of 2009: One of The End's closing parties. I played with Dubfire.
Tune of 2009: Lusine 'Two Dots' (Ghostly International)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Joris Voorn
The track that changed your life: Daft Punk's 'Da Funk'. It opened up electronic music for me.
Most underrated DJ: Resident DJs. They're the people that set the great clubs up.
Biggest challenge this year: Balancing the studio and touring. I think I got there in the end - thanks to my laptop.
Top tech toy: iPhone. It's got everything I need on there.
Upon looking back at 2009, Nic Fanciulli, undoubtedly one of dance music's all-round good eggs, has a little theory to sum up this most turbulent of years.
"Quality, not quantity, that's the one thing that could be best said to define the last 12 months," he says. "For instance, last year I probably played in Buenos Aries three times, but this year I played once and it was one of the gigs of the year."
Of course, it's all to do with the economy. Entering 2009, Fanciulli and his fellow jocks knew that the year ahead was going to be difficult for clubs, but in a curious way, he believes that the troubles in the outside world gave clubs a kick up the backside.
"If people were out, it's because they wanted to be out," he says. "Everyone put in more of an effort, so there was a better vibe. There might have been less club nights, but I don't necessarily think that was a bad thing."
Musically, Fanciulli goes from strength to strength; he's been in the studio with Dubfire and Joris Voorn and his party with long-time ally James Zabiela in Miami was the stuff of legend.
